The Art and Science of Preserving Fresh Flowers and Foliage. Part 2

Preserving Foliage: Capillary Action

Preserved foliage including eucalyptus

In our previous post, we explored the double immersion process for preserving flowers. Now, let’s delve into another method that focuses on preserving foliage: capillary action. This technique harnesses a natural phenomenon where liquids can move through branches and stems without external forces.

Unlike double immersion, capillary action preservation doesn’t necessarily require full submersion of the plant material. Often, only the stems are placed in a vessel containing the preservation solution.

Preservation solutions are typically a blend of chemicals designed to replace the plant's natural fluids while maintaining its structure and colour. Common components include glycerol (glycerine) to prevent drying, humectants to retain moisture, and preservatives to inhibit microbial growth. While the exact formulation is often a trade secret, these chemicals work together to create the desired outcome.

Through capillary action, the solution is drawn up through the stem and into the leaves and other parts of the plant. This process gradually replaces the natural sap with the preservation fluid, neutralising most of the original plant scent. Interestingly, in the case of eucalyptus, the preservation process seems to have little impact on its characteristic fragrance. The reason for this is still not fully understood, but it’s believed that the structure of eucalyptus leaves and the composition of its essential oils contribute to preserving the aroma.

Just like with double immersion, we carefully select suppliers who specialise in capillary action preservation. This ensures that the foliage we use in our designs is of the highest quality, hypoallergenic, and meets our sustainability standards.

Capillary action is a fascinating process that allows us to preserve the beauty of foliage. By understanding the science behind this method, we can appreciate the complexity involved in creating lifelike preserved plants. Capillary action offers a low-maintenance and eco-friendly way to bring the outdoors in.
